Also that night: In the City Gallery – new work by Erin Drew. Representatives will be on hand with information about great urban Indy neighborhoods including Mapleton-Fall Creek, home of the Watson Bird Sanctuary. Throughout the building, 23 HCA artist open studios. In the gym – demonstrations by Rock Steady Boxing, a program designed to improve the quality of life for people battling Parkinson’s disease through non-contact, boxing training.

The art hangs through March 31st.

The Harrison Center For The Arts has been named a finalist for support from ArtPlace, an unprecedented private-public collaboration of nine of the nation’s top foundations, eight federal agencies including the National Endowment for the Arts, and six of the nation’s largest banks. ArtPlace supports creative placemaking with grants and loans, research and advocacy. The Harrison Center joins 128 other organizations in 68 cities working to transform their communities by driving vibrancy through investments in the arts. This funding would support the Harrison Center’s City Gallery: Indy’s Urban Living Center designed to connect people to culture, community and place to strengthen core neighborhoods.

The selected projects represent the best of the more than 2,000 applications from across the country. Finalists were chosen for their potential to have a transformative impact on community vibrancy. Proposed projects run the gamut from temporary art spaces to permanent performance venues, from music festivals to art walks and from streetscaping to artist residencies.

“This new round of applications shows that there is serious momentum building for creative placemaking in the U.S.,” says Carol Coletta, president of ArtPlace. “These artists and designers are an undervalued asset for kick-starting momentum in our communities. And in this economy, it’s hard to imagine why any community wouldn’t deploy every asset it has for success.”

ArtPlace expects to distribute $15 million in 2012. This year’s grant recipients will be announced in May. Last year, 34 organizations received a total of $11.5 million.
The full list of finalists can be found at http://www.artplaceamerica.org/2012finalists.

Participating foundations include Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Ford Foundation, The James Irvine Foundation, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation, The Robina Foundation and an anonymous donor. In addition to the NEA, federal partners are the departments of Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Education and Transportation, along with leadership from the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Domestic Policy Council. ArtPlace is also supported by a $12 million loan fund capitalized by six major financial institutions and managed by the Nonprofit Finance Fund. Participating institutions are Bank of America, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Chase, MetLife and Morgan Stanley.

This show features paintings from a series which were exhibited in “New American Paintings #83″, and at Four Star Gallery in Indianapolis. In addition to these earlier paintings, I have added a larger painting, and a group of drawings. Each new area of work explores the “mount” imagery in a different way.

All share the simple, yet compelling theme, and yet each group represents somewhat disparate artistic intentions. In Dewclaw’s intimate quietude, three walls of art are having the gentlest of showdowns….on Superbowl weekend. I hope you will join us for Friday’s reception or on Saturday.

Dewclaw is located in the South Studios at the Studios at the Complex, 1125 Brookside Ave, Indianapolis. Free parking in the gated lot across the street. There are 2 areas of studios, each with a separate street entrance, located several doors apart. Look for sidewalk signs.

In the Harrison Gallery, Phillip Lynam’s show, A Fast Thing Slow, invites attendees to experience his paintings as you would an instant replay from a sporting event. Lynam says, “I try to make paintings that act like slow motion replays of high speed events, paintings that reward time spent looking closely.”

In the City Gallery – Herron School of Art + Design professor, Marc Jacobson’s From a Car Window: 21 years painting the city explores “ordinary places – shopping malls, parking lots, commercial buildings and avenues. While these subjects serve as starting points for the paintings, my primary goals are abstract.”

Gallery No. 2 features Every Moment is an Epitaph – new work by Herron School of Art + Design student, Bobby Gilbreath.

Other artists exhibiting throughout the building include Elizabeth Smith, Alan Bundza, many Harrison Center studio artists and more.

On the Gym Floor – bicycle polo returns! On the Gym Ceiling – Super Ball – an installation by Shannon Hinkle, suspends all manner of bounce-able sporting gear – basketballs, yoga balls, baseballs, super balls – from the rafters of the Harrison Center’s historic gymnasium.

The First Friday after party is at TURF this Friday night from 9 to Midnight. Admission is $5.00 with cash bar and food provided by Skyline Club Cafe.

The visual art phenomenon known locally as the IDADA First Friday Art Tour is eager to welcome First Friday veterans, first-timers, and out-of-towners this Friday, February 3, from 6:00-9:00pm. Start your tour at any one of the 30+ visual art venues around downtown Indianapolis or begin your night at TURF: IDADA Art Pavilion, where you can check out 23 galleries featuring installation artworks. While you’re there, grab an IDADA First Friday Art Tour map and catch a shuttle to one of the Celebration Sites where galleries and restaurants await.

The IDADA First Friday Art Tour is a free, self-guided tour of galleries and other types of visual art venues throughout downtown Indianapolis. A map and brochure are available for download here. Most venues are open from 6:00-9:00pm, but some are open later. Most venues are located within close proximity to restaurants, shops, and other attractions. For information on the Super Celebration Sites and shuttles, please click here.

TURF: IDADA Art Pavilion is located at 202 N. Alabama St., within the former City Hall Building, a 103-year-old Indianapolis Landmark. The event is a temporary, experiential gallery with exhibits appealing to the senses of sight, smell, sound, and touch. Visitors will enjoy and explore 23 gallery spaces installed by 21 juried artists, most of whom are local to Indianapolis. TURF represents Indianapolis and its artists on their “turf” to the local Indianapolis community and to the audience of visitors in town for the Super Bowl. TURF: IDADA Art Pavilion has been made possible by the joint efforts of IDADA, the Super Bowl Host Committee, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office. TURF Café is open from 11am-7pm daily and offers gourmet options for lunch and dinner. Visit www.TURFIndy.com for more info.
