George Meluch is on a deeply personal investigation of human existence, and he’s making his explorations through intuitive, untethered acts of painting. In May, He will be presenting an exhibition of his work titled “Frozen Time, Quiet Space”. These paintings address themes of isolation, and “the constructed ideas of the non-technological human experience”.

George embraces the fluctuating mystery of our known realities, and these still paintings convey that state of flux. “The time is no time, and the meta narrative is shifting. The content playfully taunts both the future speculations of this special, current year and the ever evolving contemporary science dealing with the past. Tiny tensions pull at all the corners of conceptual and painterly edges and color’s role is conflicted in the symbolic and the illusory fashion.”

This body of work also hints of metaphysical awakenings. “It is a constructed dream, but it is not an idyllic space, or one based on longing, or on fear. Figure and character are forced into fluidity, disallowed solid identity for the opening of their theoretical purpose. This painted world is a silent world.”

George Meluch is an Indiana based artist, with a 2010 BFA in Painting from the John Herron Institute of Art. He previously studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he won the Fred Walker award for creative writing in 2005 and participated in a number of group shows. In 2010 and 2011 he attended the Purdue Graduate Fine Arts program. He is obsessed with history and historical theory, dubiously studious of accepted paradigms and ingenuously loving of those which are disregarded. He does not believe in the concept of belief and is a huge fan of all religions and other interesting human practices.

Some of the work in this show is from his Time Machines series which “merges painting with the art of assemblage. The pieces at their core, are paintings on canvas, masonite, or other surfaces, and then I integrate real antique parts and other 3-dimensional elements into them” His work explores “the theme of perception and how what we perceive may not always be what is there in reality. Based on the ancient “trompe l’oeil” technique (meaning “to fool the eye”) that was used by the Greeks and Romans to visually create space where there is none,” he strives to “create a seamless flow between the paint and objects, drawing the viewer in for a closer look to see what is real and what is painted.”

His technique is described in more detail in this short video documentary: http://youtu.be/PXj3CafThBM?hd=1.

The proper handling and shipping of artwork can be the difference between life and death for your work. Join us on April 11 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art where we will hear from Jesse Speight, the IMA’s Storage and Packing Supervisor. Jesse will share the ins and outs of shipping and storage, including tips that will keep your works of art safe.

Chimaera’s Attic is an eclectic show bringing together 18 female artists, each of whom has made an impact in the local arts community of Indianapolis. Each artist represents a different perspective, and through use of various mediums has enriched the local arts scene. According to Greek mythology, the Chimaera (ki-meer-uh) is a fire-breathing female creature compromised of multiple animals. William Faulkner re-defined the Chimaera in his novel, The Sound and The Fury, describing her as a woman who “dreams, has airy hopes and illusions of the mind.” Often these illusions are of unrealized dreams that exist within her imagination.

For the last five years, photographer Richard Ross has focused a powerful lens on American juveniles run afoul of the law. He’s compiled what he calls “a database of unbiased and compelling photographic and textual evidence of a system that houses more than 100,000 kids every day.” He hopes his efforts will instigate policy reform. When Ross shot at the Cook County Detention Center, he said its director, Earl Dunlap, greeted him with “Welcome to the gates of Hell.”

Ross will speak as a part of Herron School of Art and Design’s Visiting Artists Lecture Series on April 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Basile Auditorium of Eskenazi Hall.

His project, Juvenile-in-Justice, documents the placement and treatment of American juveniles in facilities that confine, punish, assist, and occasionally, harm them. The project includes images and interviews with more than 1,000 juveniles in more than 300 facilities in 30 states, Canada and Mexico.

“I have interviewed and photographed both pre-adjudicated and committed youth in the juvenile justice system,” Ross said. “I have made sure to keep the children’s identities unknown, by either photographing them from behind or obscuring their faces.

“I have photographed group homes, police departments, youth correctional facilities, juvenile courtrooms, high schools, shelters, Montessori classrooms, Child Protective Services interview rooms, maximum security lock-down and non-lock-down shelters, to name a few,” he said. Works from the project were featured in a photo spread in the October 2011 edition of Harper’s Magazine. In February, Ross was featured on PBS NewsHour. He has taughtat the University of California, Santa Barbara since 1977.

Ross has been funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Fulbright and the Center for Cultural Innovation. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 to complete Architecture of Authority, a body of work depicting architectural spaces worldwide that exert power over the individuals confined within them. ArtForum called it one of the best exhibitions of the year.

Ross will be joined at Herron by his daughter, Leela Cyd Ross. In addition to Juvenille-in-Justice, they will discuss the Fovea project, which describes a collection of soft-focus, nostalgic images, including a large-scale work they are collaborating on for the new Eskenazi Health Center in Indianapolis, and the Leela Cyd project, which includes an unbroken, four-year-long series of photographs Richard shot of Leela every morning before she went to school. Leela took over the final year of the project as a student at School of Visual Arts in New York.
