About Joy Hernandez
Joy Hernandez is an acrylic and aerosol artist in Indianapolis that has been part of the Art Bank for 2 years. Her work references the unusual sights she sees, such as local landscapes or baby goats, and also whimsical characters such as neurotic robots. She has explored a combination style of loose acrylic painting with an aerosol stencil technique, acknowledging ‘one-shot’ aspect of the final layer of stenciling. “There are no do-overs. You have to live with however the painting turns out.” She has a love for animals and Nerd Culture that often seeps through into her work.

About the Art Bank
The Art Bank was founded in 2007 by Dan Haynes. It occupies an old bank building that retains many of the architectural features of the bank, including the drive-up window, the teller room and two vaults. The Art Bank has been an IDADA First Friday Gallery Walk location since the beginning, with Haynes sitting on the IDADA board of directors for three years. It has been host to over 100 downtown artists since its inception, by using a method renting wall space to the artists. Located off the cultural trail, at Mass Ave and College, it has also been host to several Robbing The Bank® events over the years.

Now in its 12th year, IMAF is a free, daylong outdoor festival highlighting the best independent local and regional musicians, visual artists, food vendors and crafters. Founded in 2002, IMAF celebrates musicians who perform original live music and artists who create original work. In the courtyard of the historic Harrison Center for the Arts two stages feature continuous music. Inside the building and surrounding the Harrison Center, over 100 vendors peddle their wares in the juried Indieana Handicraft Exchange’s Summer Fair. Many of the Harrison Center artists will open their studios during the festival as well and the galleries will feature new work by Beth Eisinger and Megan Hart in the Harrison Gallery and Kyle Ragsdale in the City Gallery. An exciting line-up and wide range of musical genres are represented in this year’s band line-up, including The Pinstripes, winners of the 2007, 2009 and 2010 Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Best World Band. Join Martin Krause, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the IMA, Rachel Berenson Perry, Art History Author, and Laurette McCarthy, Independent Scholar and Researcher, as they discuss the endurance of Indiana artists in the face of the ceaseless struggle to earn a living by their art. Much of the primary source material behind these remarks was collected by Wilbur D. Peat (1929-1965) director of the IMA from 1929-1965 to whom the evening’s program is dedicated. Peat was also a historian whose work resulted in the book Pioneer Painters of Indiana. The research materials related to this publication are now available in digital format through a partnership between IMA Archives and IUPUI University Library. Light refreshments will be available prior to the program.

On Second Friday, we will have representatives from the Clay County Humane Society on hand to help with our pet supplies donation collection. They are asking for food, beds, toys, whatever you’d like to donate. The Clay County Humane Society is a small, no-kill, rural shelter in Brazil, Indiana. They cover more territory than just their county, however, as budget cuts in other counties have forced closure of other shelters. Our Second Friday flyer is attached to this email, and 10% of all of Hernandez’s sales for the month will be donated to the Clay County Humane Society.

On May 11th, we will be one stop on the Cultural Ribbon Cutting Celebration! Our parking lot will be teeming with music and fun. Make sure you stop in to see us during our expanded Saturday hours: 12pm-9pm.

On May 16th, the Art Bank will be THE SPOT for a premiere party for the new movie, “Star Trek Into Darkness!” Join your fellow Star Trek fans in celebration of Roddenberry’s dream, and, this time around, J.J. Abram’s vision. Get caught up on the 2009 film, win some trivia prizes, and take part in a raffle! The event is all ages and admission is free. It runs 6-9pm, so as to give fans time to get to their theater of choice for a midnight showing!

On May 24th, Bark Art! returns! Join Patty Spitler and the Pet Pals TV Crew, and many of our friends, as we raise money and awareness for the Clay County Humane Society and their offshoot group The Phoenix Fighters. Phoenix is a beautiful Great Dane that was found this winter, starved nearly to death, and chained to a shed on one of the coldest nights of the winter. He was born deaf, but is blind in one eye due to abuse from a former owner. He has made a remarkable recovery and is, with the help of his human friends, battling animal neglect where ever he can. Come meet Phoenix at Bark Art! This event is all ages and doggie friendly. It runs 5-9pm.

It’s IDADA First Friday at the Harrison Center and this month is all about paying homage – to artists and particular artist’s distinctive styles, to our neighborhoods, to our homes and more! In the Harrison Gallery, we are pleased to present two of our own studio artists, Candice Hartsough McDonald and Emily Gable. McDonald, an illustrator known for her brand, Cordial Kitten teams up with Emily Gable, who studied painting at Herron School of Art + Design and is part of the artist collective, Know No Stranger.

In the City Gallery, HCA artist Emma Overman‘s new body of work, A Stroll Around the Block, was inspired by her Mapleton-Fall Creek neighborhood and the sometimes surprising discoveries made while strolling the streets close to her home. Overman has illustrated several children’s books and her work has been published in Edgycute: from Neo-Pop to Low Brow and Back Again, by Harry Saylor.

Gallery No. 2 features work by Herron School of Art + Design undergraduate printmaker, Christian Brock Forrer. In this show, Life Long Dreams, Forrer explores “the thoughts and emotions behind lost love and longing.” Also from Herron School of Art + Design, the Gallery Annex features Vessels – work by Bethany Knuckles, Emily Schorn and Katherine Thayer. In Hank & Dolly’s Gallery is HCA studio artist Bobby Gilbreath’s No Place Like Home.

Artists William Denton Ray and Quincy Owens have collaborated to curate their third themed group show in the Underground. For Homage, local artists have created work inspired by another artist.

The work hangs through May 31st.

Throughout the building, the Harrison Center’s 25 artist studios will be open for exploring.

About Luke Austin Daugherty
Luke Austin Daugherty is a singer/songwriter, poet, painter, storyteller and author. His new 12 song CD “Half Life” was released March 1, 2013 which is his 8th album and 4th studio recording. “Half Life” is a project split down the middle; half the songs were written in a time when everything made sense and half when they didn’t, the same writer, the same heart, and the same guitar…but different economies of reality. Luke describes his genre as Americana and Modern/Progressive Folk.
