Why:
IDADA Critique Night was started to provide peer critiques for members as well as promote artistic dialogue amongst the Indianapolis arts community.
What:
IDADA Critique Night is a 2 hour monthly gathering of artists and arts professionals who are IDADA members. One or two artists will present art they want reviewed by their peers each month. The goal is for the artist(s) to receive feedback from other artists and arts professionals, and to pose conceptual and aesthetic questions to the group. These are not formal artist talks or presentations, but rather these are meant to be dialogues about the artists’ work. Both artists and audience should be open to discussion. Hosting artists will not be expected to provide food or beverages, but the attendees are encouraged to do so.
When: IDADA Critique Night will take place on the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm and last no longer than two hours. Dates and time are posted below. There will be an IDADA representative moderating the critique to make sure we stay on track time-wise.
Where:
The location will change each month. One of the hosting artists will determine the location, and it will be posted along with any parking instructions, etc. on the IDADA website. For those members without studios alternative spaces are available at The Stutz and other locations.
Who:
IDADA Critique Night is open to all IDADA members. If you are not an IDADA member, please download the IDADA membership form at http://www.idada.org/PDF/form.pdf to become a member.
Critique Etiquette:
The hosting artist has put a lot of work into preparing for his/her Critique Night and is there for a reason: to receive good, honest feedback. Each artist will expect encouraging dialogue and honest, critical conversations about his/her work. Each artist and artwork should be treated with respect. All participants are encouraged to have their own opinions about an artist’s works and all opinions will be shared equally.
Where:
Hosting artists will host Critique Night in a space of their choosing, or will host in tandem with another artist at that artists’ studio or other location. When wishing to have your work critiqued by your IDADA peers, please indicate if you would like to host at your studio or at another space. Also, if you would like to host at your studio, please indicate if you can accommodate another artist and their work in your space. Keep in mind that each artist will have a maximum of one hour allotted to their critique. Please provide moderator with address, directions, and any sort of information needed for participants regarding parking and entering your building.
When:
IDADA Critique Night occurs once per month from 6:30-8:30. Please refer to the schedule to see when the Critique Nights will occur. When signing up to host a Critique Night, please indicate your top three choices of dates to host to allow us to find the best fit on the Critique Night schedule.
Who:
Hosting artists should have a work or body of work they want critiqued by their peers. This is a great time to run across problems you are having with your work, ideas you have not quite figured out, questions you are dealing with, and problems that need to be resolved. If you are showing work you are perfectly happy with and are unwilling to question, IDADA Critique Night is probably not for that work.
What:
IDADA Critique Night is meant to open up dialogue centered on your work. Please prepare questions and a short, informal presentation regarding your work. You will be given a total of one-half hour, so please keep your presentation to 15 minutes max so participants have at least 15 minutes to respond. As host, you are not expected to provide food or beverages to participants, but keep in mind that participants may want to bring food or beverages and will likely want a place to set them. As host, you are expected to provide seating for participants. Chairs, stools and benches are all acceptable. The floor does not count as an acceptable place to sit. When signing up to host, let the moderator know the maximum number of participants you can host in your space. You can have up to 15 people. Regardless of the number of participants that you can accommodate, you must have seating for everyone as participants will arrive expecting a place to sit. Each host is allowed one or two guests who are not current IDADA members.
Note to Artists:
Be ready to hear things you may not like. Take or leave the suggestions you receive. Be open, and encouraging of others’ opinions of your work, but also be willing to engage in the dialogue, whether in agreement or in defense. If you do not think you are able to mentally or emotionally handle open critique about your work, then IDADA Critique Night may not be the right opportunity for you. Allow the audience members to speak and have their opinions,. A good suggestion is to have a friend take notes for you during the critique so you can review the comments later.
